Fabric Painting in France

  • Malbosc, 34330 Le Soulié France (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

I'm so looking forward to returning to the delightful world of Malbosc in rural SW France next June to teach another class about painting on fabric. This time we'll be aiming to complete a piece big enough to make up into a (simple) summer skirt, a top or simply a hanging or cloth for the home. So we'll be looking at and considering the placement, composition and distribution of colour and motifs to take every advantage of making a bespoke textile, a unique and special piece.

All abilities welcomed, all materials provided.

Please join me at this fully catered residential retreat to discuss, invent, understand, paint and make pattern and colour on cloth, as well as have time to explore and enjoy the extensive naturally conserved grounds and locality around Malbosc, a grand old farmhouse and hamlet in SW France. Just lolling about in the evenings is also an option!

This retreat is costed in an unusually imaginative way; here is what our hosts have to say:

Malbosc is a large old house built at the end of the 19th century and formerly used as a summer home for a wealthy wine growing family escaping the heat of the Mediterranean plain. Its lavishly styled beginnings are still a feature of the house with wood panelled rooms, elegant mosaic floors and fabric covered walls. Its peaceful, rural setting adds to the magic of the place.

It is important to us that the house has some purpose. ‘Cultural centre’ is rather too grand a name but we decided to invite people - artists, writers, musicians, yoga teachers - to run workshops, hold concerts, lead groups of any kind either for the day or for several days which bring people together to share the space and the activity. In order to make the workshops accessible to as many people as possible we decided not to charge for the accommodation.

So if you join one of the workshops here all we ask for the ‘hotel services’ is a contribution towards the costs of running the place during your stay (electricity, insurance, laundry, any cleaning necessary etc). You will, of course, pay for the tuition, your meals, any trips out, and transport from local airports/stations.

Behind this decision to run Malbosc on a non-commercial basis lies the belief that sharing this magnificent place with others without seeking personal financial gain creates an atmosphere which helps bring out the better side of ourselves, be that expressed creatively, or in the warmth of the relationships which develop during the period of the workshops, or in something taken away and then shared with others.

Each year we support a different charity and if, at the end of your stay, you feel like giving a donation you will already be spreading some good in the world.

Workshop, with Sarah Campbell and the William Morris Society

As part of Selvedge Magazine’s Textile Month programme of events, join Sarah at the William Morris Society for a truly unique workshop experience in a magical setting. Inspired by the delights of the natural world, Sarah will show and discuss different approaches to painting patterns and designs directly onto fabric. Starting with smaller practice pieces in the morning, participants will be able to develop their skills and ideas, and after lunch move on to painting their designs directly onto a cotton tote bag or cushion cover or fabric piece that they can take away with them. As part of the workshop a member of staff of the society will show participants a select group of items from our collection, not currently on display.

Paints, brushes, fabrics and other necessaries will be provided; participants may like to bring their own favourite paintbrushes if they have them, any special pattern and colour references they may have – and possibly an apron.

You will hopefully go home with new skills, your new creations and perhaps a fresh understanding of pattern and design.

This workshop is open to people of all abilities and experience.

Teas, coffees and biscuits will be provided.

Fabric Painting in France - an introduction

  • Malbosc, 34330 Le Soulié France France (map)

From 31 May to 6 June I'll be teaching an introductory course about pattern and painting on fabric at Malbosc, a grand old farmhouse in rural SW France. Please join me at this fully catered residential retreat to discuss, invent, understand, paint and make pattern and colour on cloth, as well as have time to explore and enjoy the extensive naturally conserved grounds and locality around Malbosc. Just lolling about in the evenings is also an option!

On the back of last year’s success, this is the second year of running this introductory course as a residential retreat. I’ll be continuing in the following week with a more focussed course concentrating on designing and painting pattern with a purposeful outcome such as a simple summer skirt or top. All abilities welcomed, all materials provided.

Young people of all abilities and skill levels are welcome– it’s a day to experiment with colourfast textile inks and paints and practise new skills. All materials including 1 white cotton T Shirt will be provided but participants are welcome to bring their own sketchbooks if they want to work on a particular theme or idea that feeds into ongoing projects. Additional T Shirts are available on the day for £4.

We’re running two 2-hour sessions, morning and afternoon - for more information and bookings, click here

Painting on Fabric - Focus on Printing

Experiment with a variety of simple printing techniques to create hand painted fabric all under the guidance of textile design legend, Sarah Campbell.

Using a variety of mark making tools – foam brushes, sponges, and other stamping devices – participants will be guided to create a sampler of techniques building up more complex forms and patterns from simple shapes. Using the humble potato as a printmaking tool, participants will be encouraged to cut their own shapes to achieve surprisingly effective organic and geometric patterns. Sarah will guide you through the techniques and encourage you to explore repeat, composition, colour sequences and contrast while you create your own pattern on a length of calico or linen, perfect for any number of future uses.

This workshop is suitable for beginners or for those who have undertaken my Fabric Painting Introduction Workshop.

Painting on Fabric - an Introduction

Spend a day learning how to hand paint on fabric. I will be sharing the techniques I have both learnt and invented over the last 55 years. Rather than following rigid rules, you will be presented with ideas, possibilities, examples, and a freedom to learn the rhythms of design and to embrace the happy accidents along the way. No prior experience is necessary,

I will be helping participants to build confidence in mark making and composition rather than focusing on drawing skills. If you love pattern and cloth and want to learn hand painting techniques this is the workshop for you! All equipment will be provided including a selection of fabric paints, paper, fabric to practice on, and either a tote bag, fabric bunting or a length of fabric for the finished piece. Participants are welcome to bring any references that personally inspire them or take inspiration from my collection of past work.

Textile Immersive Tour with The Sewing Workshop

About the Workshop:

“Join the Sewing Workshop team for an immersive textile experience alongside Sarah Campbell in beautiful England!

Imagine tapping into your creativity while staying on a beautiful country estate in the Cotswolds. In this retreat, you will explore surface design techniques such as painting and embroidery. These techniques will be used on the Lakewood Shirt to make your unique work of wearable art.

Esteemed fabric designer Sarah Campbell will be joining us for three days to teach us her signature techniques for fabric painting. She will present you with the tools to tap into your artistic side and use color and design to make your own fabric.

After our time with Sarah, The Sewing Workshop team will work with you to add even more interest to your fabric, with stitching and surface texture techniques. We will look at the different pattern pieces of the Lakewood Shirt to lay out your decorated fabric in an artistic way.

If you’ve never painted or stitched before, don’t fear! We will help you every step of the way. Plus, green rolling hills, magical forests, and glorious gardens are on your doorstep waiting to inspire you. The Cotswolds is designated as an Area of Outstanding Beauty and we will be exploring some of its grand manors, historic textile sites, and must-see gardens.

After our time in the countryside, we will make our way back to London. Here, we will spend three days fabric shopping, seeing the sites, and exploring the artistic side of the city. Finally, we will be ready to head home, full of inspiration and ready to finish our art-to-wear garment.”

This tour is sold out, but to join the waitlist (you don’t need to be American!) and for more information click here
